Rain, wind, and lack of sunshine filled last weekend but Automania 2014 pressed on. And, even more impressive, we at Short Shift sat outside and braved it all. By the end of the event we had mastered the grab-your-stuff-and-throw-it-into-the-car gauntlet with record times. Even though we were cold, wet, and tired, we know it’s not about us. It’s about bringing the cars to the car lovers! (that’s you)

This was our first time having our own booth at Automania so we wanted to do it with style. On day one we brought out a 2010 Maserati GranCabrio and a 2010 Volkswagen GTI. Despite what you might think, it was was the only GTI out there and it got plenty of looks! On day two the Maserati returned but we also brought our 2012 supercharged Range Rover Sport. That was a winning combo because they were equally luxurious and equally fast!
Among all of the Camaros, Corvettes, and Mustangs, which are no less impressive, there were some extra rare vehicles for the area. One car of note was the 80s Rinspeed Porsche 911 R69. At first glance it resembles a Ferrari Testarossa but it’s actually a custom Porsche 911 built by Rinspeed. At the time, Rinspeed added the Ferrari-ish body kit, power seats, and the best hifi radio system money could buy. What’s hifi you ask? We don’t know, we’re too young. But whether or not you agree with companies the put kits on cars, this Rinspeed R69 definitely catches the eye.
Another welcome sight was David Higgins’ rally car. Higgins is the driver for the Subaru Rally Team and this was his Subaru WRX STI. The shell and the engine are basically the same as one you would buy off the lot but the rest has been heavily modified. The STI is gutted, has a stronger suspension, a radiator in the rear, tons of carbon fiber, and much more! From every angle this car looks awesome. We only wish Higgins was there to chat with but he was busy beating the course record at the Mt. Washington Hillclimb!
All in all Automania 2014 was a great time. It didn’t seem as uncomfortably packed as previous years and that could have been due to the weather or extending the event to two days. This was welcomed by car enthusiasts and photographers because they could get up closer and not have to wait in lines.
