Boost For A Cure! – 2014

This last weekend there was a gathering of epic proportions at Modern Automotive Performance (MAP) in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. Thousands of car enthusiasts turned up for a beautiful day to watch cars dyno, hang out, and raise some money for a great cause. Dan Carey, brother of Chris Carey, Director of Sales and Marketing at MAP, had this to say about the event, “I love seeing the automotive community come together. The Midwest has so many different niche car clubs and different cliques, but at this event we are all simply enthusiasts coming together for one common goal and that is to raise funds to help families who are fighting cancer.  Regardless of what type of cars, trucks, or even motorcycles you’re into, you’re sure to find something unique and different here at our Modern Automotive Performance Boost For A Cure events.”

This was the fifth Boost for a Cure event, formerly Boost for Boobies, and it was a huge success . Inspired by Heather Carey, wife of MAP owner Chris Carey, the event started in 2010 after the loss of her mother to cervical and bone cancer. BFAC officially started at 9:30 am but even arriving at 8:45, we were about the 30th car in line. The MAP crew was ready at the entrance to start letting cars in, and the cars just kept coming.

The dyno spots were auctioned off with a starting bid of $50. However, very few went for $50. The highest was $350 and the first one went for $300! Over $5,600 was raised in just the dyno auctions. There were also several items up for auction, ranging from an Evolution 8/9 intercooler to powder coating services; all for the fight against cancer. All proceeds go towards the Boost for a Cure Cancer Alliance which aids families having financial struggles as a result of treatment. The total amount donated this year has broken $36,000 which puts the lifetime total over $100,000!

The event keeps growing and each year always seems to be better than the last. Dan and his army of volunteers are constantly working to better this event. “Preparation for this event starts essentially right after the previous event ends.  We have a dedicated team of volunteers who meet to discuss the different aspects of our events while our successes and failures are still fresh in lour minds. Together we plan out how to continue our growth and also try to find new ways to entertain event attendees.”

The range of cars was almost as spectacular as the money raised. Everything from daily driver Hondas to an ACR Dodge Viper and an 1100 whp twin turbo Trans Am showed up. Overall the weather was cooperative, which is not typical for previous BFAC events. Being such a huge event, Dan is a busy guy throughout the day, but he still had the chance to appreciate some fine automobiles: “Personally I was too busy to see all of the cars but I noticed two that really stood out to me. My friend “Bad” Brad Baxter and his ’67 C-10 pickup and also the Fourlogic “War Machine” Subaru STI. Honorable mentions go out to the Amuse Widebody 370z and the VW beetle rat rod which I didn’t actually see but have seen numerous pictures following the event.”
